About This Module

In this module, students will build on their prior understanding of linear, exponential and quadratic models to assess the fit of a regression model using residuals and the correlation coefficient. They will engage in activities that allow them to collect and analyze data, determine a model of best fit, and evaluate the reasonableness of the model selected. They will also learn to distinguish between correlation and causation.

Prior to this module, make sure students have reviewed the behaviors of linear, quadratic and exponential functions (focusing on examples with integer exponents).  Students will need to apply their understanding of these function types to determine which function type may be the best model for a given data set.

In addition, students should show fluency with constructing scatter plots, drawing a line of best fit and finding the equation for line of best fit.  See the Calculator Review section of Teacher Resources for instructions for the graphing calculator.
